Early Saxon Gedriht

The Gedriht were the oath sworn personal followers of the lord or chief, prepared to die in his service There would have been few of them in each warband and probably banded together in larger field armies. They would have been well armed and the majority would have worn a helmet and chainmail armour. The main weapon was the Gar, a 2.5 m long spear with an ash shaft (Old English, gar = spear). Many would have carried long slashing swords and hand axes.

Earlier in our period or in skirmishes, these professional troops may have carried small bucklers with a tough metal boss which was used as an offensive weapon rather than for defence. Later, they seem to have adopted the larger round shield and fought in the shieldwall style.
