AVARS

The Avars were a nomadic people whose army could muster 20,000 riders plus large contingents of subject troops. Constantly bought off by the Byzantines, they eventually joined with Sassanid forces to besiege Constantinople in 626AD. The siege failed, their subject Bulgars revolted and broke away from Avar control and the Avar Khaganate was only saved because the Byzantines were too busy with the Sassanids. The Avar's dominance was eventually destroyed by Charlemagne.
