After the Battle of Cannae, numerous Italian cities and towns were swayed to the Carthaginian side; Salapia, Arpi, Herdonia and many of the Lucanians allied themselves to them, and the Lucanians, Bruttians, Hirpini and Caudini followed suite. Before long Capua, the second largest city in Italy, allied itself to Hannibal, providing the harbour through which the Carthaginians were reinforced.
