Widely considered one of the greatest military commanders in history, Hannibal Barca was the eldest son of Hamilcar Barca, a prominent Carthaginian commander during the First Punic War. Allegedly pledging to his father that he would "never be a friend of Rome", Hannibal led Carthage into the Second Punic War, devastating the Romans at the battles of Trebia, Trasimene and Cannae with his superior military acumen. Occupying part of the Italian penisula for near fifteen years, Hannibal would convince Rome's enemies and allies to join him or conquer them outright, although he was never able to effectively crush Rome itself due to the cities defences and the Romans refusal to meet him in open battle, instead opting to wage a war of attrition.
Hannibal's string of victories came to an end when he was defeated at the decisive Battle of Zama by Publius Cornelius Scipio, whose victory would earn him the agnomen "Africanus."
