THE IRISH

Ireland was Christianised from the fifth century by Saint Patrick but remained divided into rival kingdoms ruled by dynasties such as the Ui Neill, Cenel Conaill and Cenel nEogain. Clan-based society led to constant rivalry, shifting alliances and frequent warfare.

Irish armies were tribal warbands led by a warlord or king. Elite Curaidh served as champions, while Hearthguards were noble followers, sometimes including mercenaries. Equipment typically included short swords, javelins and small round shields, with armour rare but occasionally obtained through trade. Clothing reflected status.

The bulk of the army were Warriors from the lower classes, who fought barefoot with similar weapons, while Levies were inexperienced fighters, sometimes armed with slings. Irish wolfhounds were occasionally used in battle.

These figures can represent Irish forces across early post-Roman, “Scotti,” and Viking Age contexts, as their social structure and style of warfare remained largely consistent.
