The Punic Wars

The Punic Wars were a series of three wars fought between the Roman Republic and the Carthaginian Empire between 264 BCE to 146 BCE, brought about as a result of conflicting interests between the two powers. Under the leadership of military figures such as Hamilcar Barca, Fabius Maximus, Scipio Africanus and of course the legendary Hannibal Barca, Rome and Carthage fought for over a century until Rome claimed victory in 146 BCE during the final conquest of Carthage, laying the city to waste and claiming the position of the dominant power in the Mediterannean, a position it would hold until the collapse of the Roman Empire in the 5th Century CE.
